If you've been dealing with persistent pain that just won't seem to go away, you may have heard your physical therapist mention shockwave therapy. While the name may sound intimidating, shockwave therapy is actually a safe, non-invasive treatment that has become an exciting option for helping people recover from a variety of orthopedic conditions.

As research continues to grow, shockwave therapy is becoming more common in physical therapy clinics because of its ability to promote healing while reducing pain. But what exactly is it, and what should you expect if it's recommended as part of your treatment plan?

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

Shockwave therapy uses acoustic (sound) waves that are delivered to injured tissues through a handheld device. These sound waves stimulate the body's natural healing response rather than simply covering up symptoms.

The energy from the shockwaves increases blood flow to the injured area, helping clear out damaged cells while encouraging the production of new, healthy tissue. This "kickstarts" the healing process, making it especially helpful for injuries that have struggled to heal on their own.

In addition to promoting tissue regeneration, shockwave therapy can also decrease the sensitivity of local pain receptors. In other words, it not only helps the tissue heal but can also help reduce the pain you're experiencing during recovery.

What Conditions Can Shockwave Therapy Help?

Shockwave therapy has shown promising results for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

Your physical therapist will determine whether shockwave therapy is appropriate based on your symptoms, diagnosis, and overall goals. Like any treatment, it works best when it's part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program that also includes exercises, education, and hands-on care when needed.

What Happens During a Shockwave Treatment?

One of the biggest benefits of shockwave therapy is that it's completely non-invasive. There are no needles, injections, or surgery involved.

The treatment begins with your physical therapist selecting the appropriate attachment for the handheld shockwave device based on the area being treated. After cleaning the skin, a non-medicated gel is applied to help transmit the sound waves effectively.

Your therapist will then customize the treatment by adjusting the intensity, frequency, energy output, and treatment time specifically for your condition.

Most treatments last between 5 and 15 minutes.

During the session, you'll feel a consistent, rhythmic tapping sensation against your skin. Some areas can be more sensitive than others, so it's important to communicate with your physical therapist throughout the treatment. Your comfort is always a priority, and the settings can be adjusted at any time.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The answer depends on the condition being treated and how your body responds.

For many orthopedic conditions, shockwave therapy is performed one to two times per week. Some patients notice improvements in their pain after the first few treatments, while others experience more gradual progress.

Although pain relief may happen quickly, it's important to remember that tissue healing takes time. The regenerative effects of shockwave therapy continue well after your appointment, with healing often occurring over the next 8 to 12 weeks.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Shockwave therapy is considered a safe treatment when performed by a trained healthcare professional.

The most common side effects are mild and temporary, including:

  • Skin redness

  • Mild bruising

  • Temporary soreness or discomfort

  • Mild swelling

  • Temporary tingling

These symptoms typically resolve within a few days. While more serious side effects are possible, they are very rare. Before beginning treatment, your physical therapist will review your medical history to ensure shockwave therapy is an appropriate option for you.

Is Shockwave Therapy Right for You?

Shockwave therapy is an exciting tool that allows physical therapists to help stimulate the body's natural healing process while reducing pain. For many patients dealing with chronic tendon pain, muscle injuries, arthritis, or other orthopedic conditions, it can be an effective addition to a personalized treatment plan.

If you've been struggling with pain that hasn't improved as expected, talk with your physical therapist about whether shockwave therapy may be a good fit for you. Together, you can determine the best approach to help you recover, move with confidence, and get back to the activities you enjoy.
